Uptown Glamour Meets Downtown Edge at the New Hote Hendricks
20 March 2019

Fortuna Realty Group opened Hotel Hendricks, an addition to its collection of Manhattan hotels that also includes Hotel Hugo.

Located in New York’s Garment District, the hotel is steps away from Herald Square, Bryant Park and Fifth Avenue.
The 176-room property features "eclectic" interiors by Los Angeles-based designer Marcello Pozzi (of Marcello Pozzi Architecture & Design) and produced by the Tedeschi USA, a leading company in luxury hospitality; a Latin-inspired restaurant, Paloma at Hotel Hendricks, helmed by chef PJ Calapa; and two rooftop bars.

Set against a backdrop of concrete and exposed ceilings, the hotel’s design has a number of signature elements that can be found throughout the property, including copper appointments, mahogany wood, live cherry blossoms and various animal prints. These embellishments are set against an industrial backdrop.

Guests enter through the front doors, which will often remain open (weather permitting) to evoke a resort-like open-air lobby. They then pass under a concrete awning intended to stand out among the other facades on the block. Carved into the bottom are two copper domes: one is a cone-shaped skylight while the other is a solid dome.

Inside, the front desk is on the right and the restaurant’s bar is on the left, a layout that creates a synergy between the bar and the reception desk, promoting interaction between bar visitors and hotel guests.

In the common spaces, hand-blown Murano glass chandeliers hang alongside contrasting dark-colored geometric light fixtures. Copper comes back into play in the form of more than 37,000 pennies used to accent the bars on both the first floor as well as in the rooftop lounge. Also in the lounge are cherry blossom trees that serve as a motif of the hotel’s logo: an “H” constructed of cherry blossom branches.

Taking a cue from the city’s fashion industry roots, and offering a subtle nod to Moinian’s background in the garment industry, each guestroom has either a graphic giraffe, zebra, tiger or leopard print motif, displayed above the bed and on the back of the desk chair. Feather mahogany paneling lines the rooms, while a black and copper dome light hang over each bed. The bathrooms are fitted with Waterworks fixtures and frosted glass.

Chef PJ Calapa’s newest restaurant, Paloma is spread throughout the entire Hotel Hendricks lobby. With a bar opposite the reception area, Paloma’s formal seating is in the rear, accommodating up to 80 guests, along with 20 additional sidewalk seats outside the hotel’s entrance. An outdoor patio that seats 24 completes the space, and is accented by fountains, greenery, twinkle lights and a custom Inca mural hand-painted by Peruvian painter Julio Granados.

Twenty-seven stories above Paloma, guests will find the hotel’s two rooftop bars. Hendricks Rooftop, spanning the entirety of the 26th floor, has whimsical decor and floor-to-ceiling windows showcasing views of downtown Manhattan from the Empire State Building to the Freedom Tower. Up a short staircase, guests emerge onto an outdoor rooftop deck featuring a “garage bar” serving cocktails and bar snacks.
